GROWING A GARDEN
THE COTTAGE STREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, SHARON MA
Lobby Mosaic
Handmade low-fire ceramics, ceramic tile, mirror, colored grout
8 feet high x 44 feet long
The Cottage Street School created their own landscaping as a community project. They invited me to work with the students on a mosaic to celebrate their achievement. We created a large lobby mosaic on the corridor walls, working directly with ceramic tile shards and thin set. The open style design allowed younger students the freedom to improvise. They placed larger shards along the mirrored borders and then filled in large areas with random shapes. The older student created the details, like the fish and turtle.
Grouting the mosaic took place over several nights, with parents and teachers teaming up to cover the large mosaic wall areas. During this week, the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series in many years, so there was a lot of excitement as we listened to the evening broadcasts and grouted away!
