THE COMPASS ROSE MOSAIC
THE SHORE COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL, BEVERLY MA
Exterior Mosaic
Mexican smalti, and Venetian glass, and hand made high-fire ceramics
6 feet in diameter
The Shore School is located in the town of Beverly, along the north shore of Massachusetts. The design of the Compass Rose was chosen as a metaphor for students finding their direction as they sail the seas of school and life. The four points of the compass point to the words 'Discover', 'Create', 'Explore' and 'Imagine'. The beaver in the left corner is the school mascot.
The center sailing image is made of Mexican glass smalti, which is a hand-crafted mosaic made in a subtle range of colors that allows for blending and mosaic rhythm, called 'adamento'. The circular borders are made of three quarter inch square vitreous glass tile, used in a checkerboard. The letters are hand made from clay and fired to high-fire temperatures for the outdoors.
