FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Will you travel to our community to do a project?
Yes, I enjoy working in new communities and am willing to travel. If the project location is close to Boston, I commute daily for the project. If the project location is out of state or abroad, I usually make an initial visit to the community and work several consecutive days to assess the site and start the design process. This is followed by a second, longer visit to actually do the project, which may take from one to three weeks depending on the scope.
How much does a project cost?
Costs vary from project to project, based on the size of the mosaic, the types of materials, the number of days of teaching, the amount of detail in the artwork, and distance from home. Costs for my time include design, preparing all materials, teaching, making the mosaic, and installing the mosaic. Costs for materials include the mosaics, ceramic tiles and glazes, cements and grouts, base panels, and hardware for installation.
Small sized projects range from $4,000 to $6,000 (from 20 to 30 square feet).
Medium sized projects range from $10,000 to $15,000 (from 50 to 80 square feet).
Large projects range from $20,000 to $30,000 (from 100 to 200 square feet).
How long does a project take?
Projects usually have two phases of community work. The first phase is design, where we come up with ideas through brainstorming, and often have students add their original designs with drawings or making clay tiles. The first phase is usually a week.
The second phase is making the mosaic, working together as a community, usually on a full-time schedule. Small projects take one week. Medium sized projects two to three weeks. Larger projects take a month or longer.
Between those two phases there are many steps that I do separately from the community. These include design concept drawings, final design, enlarging the design, making panels, and preparing materials. These steps take me about of month.
How long in advance do we plan and schedule a project?
Projects are usually planned anywhere from several months to a year in advance. There are sometimes opportunities for me to schedule a project soon after I am contacted, depending on coordination issues with other projects.
